Over the last 6 months, more than 500 food products have been recalled due to elevated levels of EtO contamination. Ethylene oxide and the metabolite 2-chloroethanol are both toxic, but ethylene oxide has furthermore been classified as carcinogenic and genotoxic. The use of EtO is prohibited in the EU and the maximum residue level is 0.05 mg/kg, as stated in the Regulation (EC) No 396/2005. For organic 0,01 mg/kg applies.

New EU Regulation 2021/644 amending Regulation 396/2005 regarding maximum residue levels for fluxapyroxad, hymexazol, metamitron, penflufen and spirotetramat in or on certain commodities.
