Ban on titanium oxide (E 171) as a food additive
With Regulation (EU) 2022/63 amending Annexes II and III of Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 with regard to the food additive titanium dioxide (E 171), the ban in food will apply from 07.08.2022. Titanium dioxide is a widely used whitening agent and is used for the optical enhancement of industrially produced food.
Within Germany, the additive E 171 was already classified as "no longer safe" by the EFSA in May 2021, as harmful effects on health cannot be ruled out. Thus, titanium dioxide is associated with intestinal inflammation in current research.
Foods manufactured in accordance with regulations in effect before Feb. 7, 2022, may continue to be marketed until Aug. 7, 2022. After that date, they may remain on the market until their best-before or use-by dates.
