BfR FAQ about the health risks of foods containing hemp

These days, everyone is talking about food products made with hemp. Cannabis has ascended quickly from being a niche product to gaining superfood status. The so-called novel food catalogue of the European Commission regards extracts of the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa L.) and CBD (Cannabidiol) as novel foods. These require approval in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. As part of this process, EFSA is currently evaluating the safety of CBD as a food. Results are not yet available.
