Bromide (Inorganic)

Inorganic bromide is a degradation product of the fumigant methyl bromide. Because it is both rapid and effective, methyl bromide was used for a long time and on a broad scale as a fumigant to protect plants, stocks, and buildings. Because it has acutely toxic effects on humans and is very damaging to the ozone layer, 175 countries came together in 1987 to ratify the Montreal Protocol, committing themselves to limit the use of methyl bromide as a fumigant until the year 2015, instead using alternative fumigants. Since 2015, the use of methyl bromide has been prohibited worldwide.

The maximum residue levels for methyl bromide are provided in the Regulation (EC) No 396/2005. In this case, the maximum level for the residue applies to inorganic bromide.
